“I have been working with wood in some form for over forty years – from carpentry and cabinetry to fine woodworking and marquetry. I began learning marquetry techniques in 1984 and have since mastered many of the methods. Since 1994 I have been teaching these skills to woodworkers and artists in classes and workshops at Red Rocks Community College and Rockler Woodworking. The subjects include veneering, marquetry, scroll saw basics and creating small boxes. I have been a member of the Colorado Woodworkers Guild for many years and have won many awards in local and national shows. In 2007, I demonstrated marquetry techniques, ancient and modern, at the Denver Art Museum for the Artisans and Kings Exhibition. Recently my Lingerie Cabinet won “Educators Choice” the top prize at the Denver Woodworking Show. The Cabinet competed in the National Show in May of 2014.”

“My art of marquetry (painting with wood) has evolved from my passion and experience as a woodworker. The various colors, grains and textures of wood are an inspiration to me to “let the wood speak.” Photos and sketches of favorite subjects are used to create the images of a landscape, still life, abstract or geometric design. Marquetry, using thin layers of wood (veneer), must suggest rather than duplicate an image, due to the limitation of colors and grains available, often giving the finished piece a surreal effect. Trompe l’oeil (trick the eye) techniques are intriguing to me. The play of light and shadows is portrayed by using contrasting woods, providing a three dimensional appearance.”
