Tom Wirsing

artist Tom WirsingMy love of beautiful wood is deeply engrained in my. I grew up in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, an historic center of American furniture building and woodturning. My dad was an expert on American period furniture and built reproductions in his basement workshop. That’s where I first turned wood on a lathe. Our house was filled with beautiful antiques and I loved the wonderful wood, the patina of well-rubbed finishes, and softly reflected light. So I’ve come to my appreciation of wood honestly.

Turning bowls and platters on my wood lathes brings life to my love of wood. Imagine the pleasure I receive from mounting a piece of rough timber on the lathe and turning it into a form with flowing curves, beautiful color and figure, a satin finish, and an alluring feel. I particularly love turning platters and bowls, which, like the antiques I grew up with, will become heirlooms enjoyed by many generations to come. Along with woodturning, I also enjoy building antique reproduction furniture.

I am a member of the Board of Directors and past president of the American Association of Woodturners (AAW). The AAW has over 14,000 members among whom are the finest artist woodturners in the world. I have lectured and demonstrated at woodturning symposiums in many places in the USA and in such far flung places as Europe and Australia.

I am a physicist by education. I live with my wife Melinda on a small ranch in the foothills of the Colorado Rocky Mountains with two dogs, two llamas and a few head of cattle.
